The
other day
at the pier... |
When the German museum lightship ELBE 1 returns back home
to Cuxhaven from a trip, many people come to see how the ship gets moored
at the landing pier. The other day I listened to a none-native couple´s
conversation: She: "It must be a quite difficult work to turn a
big ship like this in such a narrow harbour basin..." He: "That is no problem today - thanks to lateral
thrust units." She (astonished): "Where are those lateral thrust units?"
He (pointing at the STERN): "Well behind there, under
the waterline! You cannot see them." She remained silent. Both now looked at the bridge and wondered about the man
in the dark-blue sweater, who continously gave instructions to his helmsman:
"Engine reverse - 5 degrees starboard - engine stop"! Even if it looks like a child's play, ELBE 1 doesn't have
any lateral thrust units (and certainly none at at the stern), because
she was built as early as 1948. The man with the dark-blue sweater is
the captain and conducts the lightship with real hard work and precision
to her berth ;-)
