This is the Belgian lightship 2 West-Hinder II. It is
on display at hte Seafront Maritime Park in Zeebrugge in Belgium. A
submarine periscope had been installed in the stern of the lightship
- I have really no idea why and in my opinion it is more then useless.
What does a lightship need a submarine periscope for? Special thanks to Karl-Rainer Spitzer for his investigations
and the great photo.
Mr. Karl-Rainer Spitzer gave the answer and it is actually quite simple:
During the record level of the tide, the largest part of the WEST-HINDER
usually was under water because the ship was screwed to the Westhinder
sandbank on the basis of a misunderstanding. So a periscope had been
installed on the ship so the personnel could now see, when it became
dark and they had to light the fire. However this situation passed only
a few weeks, because it was very difficult to seal the ship in a way
that it didn't run ful of water in every flood. They broke the lightship
from the sandband, it swam on the waves like each other of its type.
Attached a documentary photo from the initially days, which proves the
result of my investigations ;o)
