December 28th, 2005 For this year the Lightship Advent Calendar remains closed. An unsuspected number of correct solutions were e-mailed to me during the last days. And although all of you would have earned a prize for your fidelity and obstinacy, there were only four prizes to win. Thank you very much to all who played. Here are the winners and their prizes! December 24th, 2005
Merry Christmas to all visitors and friends of my lightship web pages!

Test your knowledge about lightships and have fun - at the end nice prizes can be won of course. I look forward to many players and many correct solutions : -) November 14th, 2005 Lightship "Overfalls" wins 275,000 $ grant for restoration. November 12th, 2005 From October 2nd to October 8th, 2005 the annual fish market "Baltic Herring Fair" took place in Helsinki. The former Finnish lightship RELANDERSGRUND was towed from her normal berth in Kotka to Helsinki to take part in this event. I have no idea, how long the lightship will stay in Helsinki, but if you are a lucky one, you might see it on this webcam. If someone has news, I would be grateful for an e-mail. November 11th, 2005 During the Normandy landings of 1944, two Trinity House lightships marked a lane through a mine-field - one of them was the English lightvessel No. 72 carrying the name JUNO. Today it is moored in the Neath Abbey Wharf and left to itself. Unfortunately the hull is in very bad condition and absorbs water with every flood. Is there nobody who would like to look after this ship? October 22nd, 2005 My friend Margret went to Penzence to visit the world´s largest lightvessel ELBE 1 yesterday. Here you can find her article about the trip and see the newest photos. October 21st, 2005 What an adventure! After 5 stormy days and nights at the North Sea and the English Channel the German lightship ELBE 1 reached Penzance (England) safely yesterday at 7 p.m. to take part in the celebrations of the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar from October 21st to 23rd, 2005. ELBE 1 and her crew would be happy to welcome you all in Penzance this weekend! October 15th, 2005 If you are going to Sweden, don´t miss the former Swedish lightship no. 2B ALMAGRUNDET, which is in Västerås today - it is well worth a visit. October 14th, 2005 One of the more unknown lightships is the English lightvessel no. 6, which is still in the Trinity House fleet. It is a very special lightvessel, because it once was painted green to mark the famous wreck of the Texaco Caribbean in the Straits of Dover. October 9th, 2005 4 new collector´s items on my webpage - 3 postcards and one QSL-card. October 8th, 2005 I am very proud to have a new lightship-postmark in my collection - here it is. August 19th, 2005 International Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend 20.-21.08.2005
The basic objective of the event is to promote public awareness of lighthouses and lightships and their need for preservation and restoration, to promote amateur radio and to foster international goodwill. The event is always held on the 3rd full weekend in August starting at 0001 UTC on Saturday and finishing at 2359 UTC on Sunday. Over the past 7 years the International Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend has grown to over 370 lighthouses in some 51 countries around the world participating in the event. This year are also 20 lightships participating. On Sunday (International Lighthouse Day) also many lighthouses are open to the public. I wish all operators to enjoy themselves and have fun whilst making contact with as many amateur radio stations as possible.
August 10th, 2005 The German lightship ELBE 1 comes to England as part of the twinning of Penzance and Cuxhaven and the "Sea Britain 2005" Celebrations. What an adventure! It is planned to leave Cuxhaven at the 16th of October and hope to be in Penzance in time for the celebrations on the 21st to 23rd of October 2005. If all goes to plan, the lightship will be back in Cuxhaven on the 29th of October. The public can join in with this adventure: To supplement the income, the crew has made 15 places available. If you are interested and reasonably fit, you can travel from Cuxhaven to Penzance and back, eat your meals, take part in the daily running of the ship and learn all about the seaman's task. For more information please click here.
August 7th, 2005 The Dutch lightship 12 "Noord Hinder" will be towed from her normal berth in Hellevoetsluis (Netherlands) to Amsterdam at the 15th of August to celebrate the SAIL 2005. July 23rd, 2005 A great maritime event will take place in Groningen (Netherlands) next weekend. Between 150 and 180 historical working barges will fill the the City of Groningen from Thursday 28th until Sunday 31st July 2005. The German lightship BORKUMRIFF will be one of them. July 3rd, 2005 Summer holidays and no idea where to go? What about a cruise with the Trinity House flagship THV PATRICIA? For more details please click here. June 26th, 2005 LV 8 becomes a radio station - after a search of many months through the UK and Ireland, Radio Waddenzee bought the former English lightvessel no. 8 to put their studios and offices on. The lightship was towed from Rotterdam to Harlingen (Netherlands) today, where it arrived at 2:15 p.m. During the spring and summer season the ship will be anchored at sea, just outside the Harlingen harbour. When the bad weather season starts it will be moored inside the safety of the piers.

Enjoy the full story at "Tall stories" ;-) February 1st, 2005 In my opinion the Swedes had really pretty lightships in use. One of it, the Swedish ex lightship no. 23 (built in 1901) is for sale in Lindigö, Stockholm, Sweden now. The purchase price is only 2 million Swedish Kroner and it is a quite outstanding ship, because after its 70-year old term of service it was rebuilt to be a cafe and residential ship. The original deckhouse and lantern mast had been removed and came as exhibits to Öresund. The present-day construction is from the Swedish lightship no. 21 "Trelleborgs Redd". All technical data and provision characteristics can be found here. January 26th, 2005 The former English lightvessel LV93 had been towed to the east end of London and the new owner, who is a photographer, started the process of converting it into a photographic studio. What a wonderful idea, I wish good luck for this project. January 10th, 2005 The lightship days are numbered. If you would like to know more about the history, please click "The History of Light Vessels". January 1st, 2005 For this year the Lightship Advent Calendar remains closed.
