August 2nd, 2007 Help needed!
Today I received the following request of the German museum lightship AMRUMBANK/Deutsche Bucht in Emden. Maybe anyone of you has an idea how to help:
No travel permit! The Lightship was tested in dock In the bow area around the chain box grave damage was found during the safety tests, which will make leaving the mooring impossible for the foreseeable future. If we can not raise the money for the repairs (renewal of ribs, bulkhead and outer plates), all that is left is scrap. The ship, which has become a symbol by now, which holds many memories and destinies, on which many marriages took place, must not sink. We are calling on politicians, commerce, clubs and all friends of the lightship: Help us!
Hartwig Bakker - Chairman
Museum lightship Amrumbank/Deutsche Bucht e.V.

Good news - the former English lightvessel No. 14 has new owners, who are planning to live on the ship and to start an alternative healing center on it. But first the lightship with the special looking pilot house has to be towed to the UK and will be restored during the next month. Congratulations and good luck for your project!
June 2nd, 2007 New Bedford Lightship sold for scrap
The old New Bedford Lightship, which once served as the Pollock Rip Lightship, has been sold for scrap metal for the paltry sum of $10,000. The City of New Bedford removed about 20 artifacts from the vessel. By mid-June another part of America’s lighthouse history will shamefully be destroyed and lost forever. Click here to read more...

May 29th, 2007 Wonderful Co-Incidence
Sometimes, as luck wants it, the story of a long forgotten light vessel comes to life again. The other day someone sent me a holiday snap of a lantern mast of a light ship, which he had taken in Skanör (Sweden). The mast was that of the Swedish Lightship No. 8, which had served at the Falsterborev Station for year and which had been scrapped in 1976. I love co-incidences like this :-)

May 17th, 2007 Irish-English Lightvessel
When we visited Harwich last month, we saw a very special lightvessel for the first time: The former Irish lightvessel CORMORANT II was used by the Commissioners of Irish Lights from 1964 until 1983. Than the lighship was sold to Trinity House to join their fleet as Lightvessel No. 24. Subsequently automated, she is still in service.

March 4th, 2007 Model of the German lightship ELBE 1
I am always very pleased, when a ship's modeller sends photographs of his lightship model to me, which I can then show on the lightship-pages, because these kinds of models are rather rare. Brand new on the lightship-pages is a model of the German lightship Elbe 1.

January 11th, 2007 Photo of the "Inner Dowsing lightship restaurant" wanted!
If anyone of you lives near Rochester in England, I would be very grateful for a photo of the former Trinity House lightvessel No. 16. The lightship was built in 1840 (!) and is used as a restaurant ship in Rochester today. The hull remains a good example of a wooden lightship, but the mast, lantern and most deck and interior fittings have been removed to provide increased accomodation. For more information please click here.
January 1st, 2007 A very Happy New Year 2007 to all visitors and friends of my lightship webpages! I wish you a year full of wonderful lightshiping adventures.
