STORBROTTEN




The Finnish lightship STROBROTTEN was moored on STORBROTTEN station in 1922. Floating mines were detected nearly daily and in autum 1922 one of them proved fatal to the ship. The crew detected a floating mine on September 16th, 1922. It was attached to a 50-metre rope behind the vessel. The shipmaster informed the suthorities in Mariehamn of the mine and then waited for the arrival of the ship that would destroy the mine. The ship´s arrival was prevented by a storm. In the morning of September 21st, 1922 the lightship exploded and disappeared. One seamen survived the accident and was able to tell what had happened. The mine hit the side of the ship. Six crew members died in the accident.
